A replacement for the 407 has showed its claws. The new, upcoming Peugeot 508 sedan and SW (Estate) are coming to South Africa sometime in mid-2011. And we have pictures. And some details. Peugeot and Citroen, sister brands, are both going after the same sweet German trio of chocolates (3, A4, C) with the 508 and C5 respectively.
We thought the 407 would represent itself quite well in the market when it launched a few years ago. But a combination of factors, including the advent of the NCA, fierce brand loyalty and the recession blocked the car’s progress.
New 508 is aiming to change all that for the better. It wants to climb up the corporate ladder, be taken more seriously as a contender and take a bigger bite of that ice cream. But what does it have to offer?
A plethora of engines of course, starting with the 1.6 petrol turbo used by the MINI, Citroen DS3 and 308 CC among others, will be available. We are probably not getting that in Mzansi. What we are getting is the 2.0-litre HDI turbo diesel and the 3.0-litre HDI model. Big news is the Hybrid4 which, you guessed it, runs a hybrid system. Different from other hybrids is the fact that instead of petrol it uses diesel technology and electric power.
