Launched at a media event which was partly held in Atteridgeville township, west of Pretoria, the new Chevrolet Aveo Hatchback makes its entry in the South African vehicle market as a significant upgrade on the model it replaces. Bold styling imparts a sporty image and in length and width the Aveo Hatch boasts the biggest dimensions in its class. The car competes against such cars as the Toyota Yaris, Mazda2, Renault Clio, Daihatsu Sirion, Citroen 107, Fiat Grande Punto, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen Polo and its own fellow General Motors cousin the Opel Corsa among others.
The fresh design is an extensive revision of the previous model with only the windscreen, roof dome, and door outer panels carried over from the earlier generation vehicle. Both internally and externally the new Aveo Hatchback offers significant advances over its predecessor. On the road it offers a smooth, comfortable ride with precise handling and a high level of built in safety.
Power comes from an enhanced version of GM’s 1.6 litre Ecotec engine with multi-port fuel injection, and four valves per cylinder. Sophisticated electronic controls, including electronic throttle control, assist in achieving an effective balance between performance and economy. Maximum power is 77kW at 5800 rpm with 145Nm of torque available at 3600rpm. This is achieved with a claimed combined cycle fuel economy of 7.3 l/100km for the manual transmission derivative and 7.7 l/100km for the automatic.
The Aveo characterises the Chevrolet mission of delivering on the promise of cars that are not just stylish but functional and fun to drive as well.
The sporty Aveo Hatchback is offered in a range of four models with a choice of 5-speed manual transmission in “L” and “LS” and LT trim and 4-speed automatic transmission in “LS” trim. The four new 5-door hatch models join the Aveo LS and Aveo LT sedan models that are already established in the market.
Together the Aveo Sedan and Hatch provide wide coverage of the small car/entry level segment that has matured significantly in recent years with buyers demanding ever-higher levels of sophistication and overall quality.
A number of features are offered to attract the younger customer, so depending on the model – L, LS or LT – you can get things like an MP3 jack, fog lamps, alloy wheels, central locking and leather seats. What is standard from the baseline L models is aircon, which means all Aveo models offer it.
