General Motors said today it would shut down Saturn after respected Detroit businessman Roger Penske shocked GM and 350 Saturn dealers by saying that his plans to buy the storied brand had fallen apart. The announcement came a day before GM and its dealers expected the deal to be finalized. The failure could cost as many as 13,000 jobs at dealerships nationwide and GM. Penske’s plans for Saturn depended on securing another manufacturer to build future vehicles — a critical part of deal that fell apart when the board of directors for that unidentified automaker rejected the arrangement. That manufacturer was Renault-Nissan, a person close to the talks told the Free Press.

(Midbank/Thembalethu have won the Mpumalanga Bus Driver of the Year competition numerous times and one of their drivers won the trophy as the overall winner in all of the categories in 2009).
“Once the question of what to buy was decided, the next was from whom to buy,” says company owner Bonthuys. “As they say in the industry, the sale is the wedding but the after sales service is the marriage – and as we all know, the hard work only starts once the honeymoon is over!”
This is where McCarthy Kunene came into the picture. “We started our negotiations with Johann, Louis and the team some time ago,” says McCarthy Kunene Managing Director Gert Prinsloo. “After many meetings we managed to structure a deal to the satisfaction of both parties.”
Business is about relationships and the McCarthy team has worked hard to earn the trust of this reputable company, according to Prinsloo. Midbank Thembalethu marketing manager Louise Swanepoel attests to this. “McCarthy sales executives almost became part of the family and we appreciated that they showed a genuine interest in our business.”
Most rewarding, though, was when Midbank/Thembalethu presented the newly-painted buses to their customer. “They were absolutely delighted, and that again confirmed that we had made the right decision to go with Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles and McCarthy Kunene.”

Effort seems likely to close Wednesday. Detroit businessman and booster Roger Penske is on track to close a deal to buy General Motors' Saturn division on Wednesday, the Free Press learned Monday. The official announcement could come Thursday. GM and Bloomfield Hills-based Penske Automotive Group, the nation's No. 2 auto retailer, have been working to finalize the sales agreement since June, when a tentative deal was first announced. The original agreement called for GM to continue building the Saturn Aura sedan and the Vue and Outlook crossovers for two years. The sale is expected to save 350 U.S. dealerships. Saturn dealers have said they are eager to work with Penske, chairman of his namesake automotive company. Penske is credited with Detroit's successful Super Bowl preparations, reviving Grand Prix racing on Belle Isle and turning around several companies, including Hertz Truck Leasing in the 1980s and Detroit Diesel Corp. in the 1990s. Earlier this year, GM decided to phase out Saturn if a purchaser couldn't be found for the storied brand. In June, GM said it was talking to Penske and hoped to close a deal by the end of the third quarter, which is Wednesday.
General Motors’ experiment selling new cars and trucks in California online through eBay comes to an end Wednesday, GM said today.
The termination comes less than a month after GM officials talked about the possibility of taking the program nationwide later this year. That was before GM launched a major new marketing campaign called “May the Best Car Win” and other incentive programs. John McDonald, a GM spokesman, said rolling out the eBay program as another nationwide campaign could detract from the other programs. The eBay program, which launched Aug. 11, was the first sales program launched by the new GM as it came out of bankruptcy July 10. It was extended through the end of September. The program saw 1.5 million unique Web visitors and generated more than 15,000 customer leads for dealers to follow up on, McDonald said. He didn’t know how many vehicles were sold through the program. “We are calling it a success,” he said. The program helped raise awareness of GM vehicles in California, generated high quality leads and allowed GM to experiment selling vehicles online in a different way, McDonald said, adding: “We learned a lot.” About 225 dealers participated in the program, which allowed shoppers to purchase a vehicle at the advertised price — called “Buy it now” — or negotiate through eBay’s “Best Offer” option.
