SURPRISINGLY GOOD AUDI A5 SPORTBACK LAUNCHES IN SOUTH AFRICA


Markus Gleitz can sure keep a secret. He kept one for over four years from his family, his friends and even his girlfriend. No, Gleitz is not some German secret agent. He’s an automotive designer based in Ingolstadt. And his secret was the Audi A5 Sportback. See, the new cars you see driving around on the road aren’t exactly new in the sense of something like an iPod or a TV. Designers and engineers work on a car for about five years before it’s ready to go public. Gleitz started work on the A5 Sportback sometime in 2004, beginning with a proposition sketch which was presented to Audi bosses.
As in any other office environment, the competition amongst colleagues is quite high; everyone wants to impress the bosses. In this instance it was Gleitz’s interpretation of the A5 model that captured the boss’s attention and he was given the go-ahead to help further develop the model.

People, including myself, have often wondered where exactly the car fits into the whole Audi range. I mean you already have the A4 with four doors and the A5 with its two doors. Plus there are Avant models to suit the more practical family that wants extra space. Why go Sportback? In fact, what exactly is a Sportback.

Sportback apparently slides between what we South Africans call a station wagon and a coupe. The roofline is slanted and extends sideways to elongate the shoulder line for that extra space. Wheel arches are wide but the upper body isn’t as wide as a wagon’s.

Gleitz took some time off from his busy schedule (I asked him time and time again what he was working on at the moment but to no avail…or did he tell?) to join us during the car’s launch down in KwaZulu Natal. It’s not often that one gets to meet the guy who actually designed the car you drive, albeit some years before. He’s totally unassuming; a young buck so far from his 40s that you’d think his life hadn’t begun. Yet the maturity of his design left me breathless.

Nothing like a nice three-hour drive to explain why the Sportback exists. While the freeloader goes for the Avant and the carefree moneyed eye the Coupe, the responsible neighbourhood racer picks the Sportback. Not only does it offer excellent interior space but it also looks very good as well. Simplicity is a trait now quite synonymous with the Audi brand. In fact VW Group (of which Audi is a major part) has adopted the word simplicity as a cornerstone of its styling philosophy. Chief Designer Walter de Silva, an eccentric Italian, is the driving force behind keeping things simple. “If a line has no use don’t include it” he’s said to often say.

I must admit I wasn’t particularly bowled over by the car’s styling at first. After all the A5 Coupe – interestingly designed by a Japanese man – is still the iconic coupe not just at Audi but in its segment as well. The Sportback was just a mere addition of two extra doors, in my head at least.

But after driving it through the valleys of northern KZN I began to mingle with it. I began to appreciate the kind of buyer who might be interested in it. Station wagons are not so cool in the SA market; we just don’t buy them. Coupes are very cool indeed, but most can’t swallow the kind of padkos, pram, cotbed, grocery bags etc that we are accustomed to. Plus getting into the back is a mission. Enter the Sportback. The wheelbase is 2.8 metres long which is almost as long as a whole sub-compact Japanese car. Space with pace.

Pace is good, but is there a compromise in handling? Not a chance. Technically the car shares almost everything with the Coupe, which means handling is on the upper end of the fun-on-meter. This is especially applies to the quattro models which give you not just the safety net of AWD when needed, but the feeling that you are driving a rear-wheel-drive car. Almost.

My first leg of two found me taking the keys of a 3.0 TDI. I love that engine, it’s one of my favourites on the market. It’s the same 3.0 V6 diesel turbo, common rail DOHC with direct injection found in other Audis. Maximum power is 176kW between 4000rpm and 4400rpm while maximum torque of 500Nm appears from 1500rpm to 3000rpm. Good flexibility indeed and it shows on the open road where the link between the accelerator, 7-speed S Tronic gearbox (Sportback is only available in automatic in Mzansi) and wheels seems as short as Mike Tyson’s temper. Speaking of the pint-sized bulldog, the TDI will munch kilometers with the ease of a chainsaw through a dry log. It just keeps pushing. Audi claims a 0 - 100km/h acceleration time of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h. We couldn’t achieve neither, but I’m sure we would get pretty close if we tried harder.

Truth be told the 3.2-litre V6 is not my cuppa I’m afraid. In Gauteng where the altitude hovers around 1500m such engines really suffer. So much so that a 155kW 2.0T would give it a throat-choking scare and possibly kick its arse in the right hands. But at the coast it breathes well enough and growls appropriately. Power is rated at 195kW at 6500rpm and peak torque is 330Nm between 3000rpm and 5000rpm.

The more time I spent with the A5 Sportback the more I got to appreciate its properties. More importantly I began to understand its purpose and realised that Audi has a winner in its hands. Having shrunk at a slower rate than its two main rivals in 2009, the brand will make use of its latest addition to the fullest as it chases BMW for supremacy in the premium sector.

BRAKES AND HANDLING SYSTEMS

Instead of the traditional mechanical/hydraulic brake system, the Maybach is equipped with an electrohydraulic system known as Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC™). This system has two central control units – a design feature which has significant advantages with regard to the division of the brake circuits. The key benefit of this system is that it is able to modulate the brake pressure required for each individual wheel with greater precision and deliver it more quickly. This means that this advanced brake system can respond more appropriately to the driving situation to provide the optimum braking effect. Sensotronic Brake Control also enhances the operation of important safety-related dynamic handling systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and ABS/BAS, which for instance sense the onset of skidding and automatically intervene to stabilize the vehicle. The Maybach is equipped with the latest chassis technology which includes independent double wishbone front suspension and independent multilink rear suspension, as well as AIRMATIC Dual Control air suspension. AIRMATIC DC features air springs complemented by an additional spring-rate adjustment system and also includes adaptive damping with integrated level control. As a result, the vehicle occupants are able to enjoy a ride quality of unprecedented smoothness.

INTELLIGENT BI-XENON HEADLAMPS

Bi-xenon is an innovative headlamp technology in which both the low and main beam are produced by powerful xenon gas discharge lamps. The additionally integrated active light function can enhance the illumination of curves in the road by up to 90 percent, since the bi-xenon modules swivel as a function of the car’s steering angle, speed and rate of turn. At the same time, the dynamic headlamp range adjustment changes the angle of the headlamp beams to compensate any pitching movements. When the car turns a corner at speeds up to 19 mph the cornering light function of the headlamp unit on the inner side is automatically switched on.

MODULAR ROOF SYSTEM

The Maybach is available with an electric tilting/sliding sunroof made from 0.25 inch laminated glass and installed over the rear cabin of the Maybach 62. Your Maybach can also be specified without this feature.

PARKTRONIC

PARKTRONIC makes maneuvering into parking spaces easier. LEDs show the driver how close the car is to a detected obstacle and an audible signal provides an additional warning.

PASSIVE SAFETY

The newly developed body features a crash-optimized passenger compartment that sets new standards in terms of geometry and the thickness and quality of the materials used. More over, a sophisticated sensor system in the Maybach is used to detect the type and severity of an accident. The weight of the front passenger, for instance, is registered by a special foil in the seat cushion (occupant classification), while two sensors at the front of the car help to determine how severe a crash is, and how the vehicle’s safety systems will respond. The Maybach also has a two-stage, situation-dependent triggering system for the driver and front passenger airbags. All four seats are equipped with three-point seat belts enhanced by high-performance tensioning retractors, beltforce limiters and comfort-fit mechanisms. The upper belt sash guide is built into the seatback. Side air bags in the seatbacks, plus separate curtain airbags for all seats give the occupants added protection. The reclining seats in the Maybach 62 are also fitted with crash-responsive seatbacks.

KEYLESS-GO

The Maybach can also be unlocked by touching the door handle when you carry the electronic key with you. There’s no need to insert a key to start the engine – just push the button on the gearshift lever and the Type 12 powerplant comes to life.

AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL

Every Maybach has two climate control systems: one for the front compartment and one for the rear. Each can be programmed and operated independently. The high-performance climate control system not only delivers the ideal temperature very efficiently but also responds extremely quickly when the settings are changed. The four-zone system allows different temperature, blower speed and air distribution settings to be programmed for each occupant. A specially designed ventilation system around the side windows provides added comfort when outside temperatures are particularly high or low. A solar sensor automatically makes the necessary temperature adjustments. The system is, of course, equipped with a dust filter and an activated charcoal filter with smog sensor and automatic recirculation control.

RIDE COMFORT

Both the front and rear seats in the Maybach are master pieces of comfort technology. All the seats are heated. The shoulder belts automatically adjust to the height of the driver or passenger, which helps to enhance their protective capability. The seats are upholstered in Grand Nappa leather and feature multicontour seatbacks with dynamic lumbar supports. All the seats are electrically adjustable for fore/aft, height, seatback and cushion angle, cushion length and head restraint height. The Maybach 62 exclusively offers extending and reclining rear seats fit for a private jet. To protect from the sun and guard from the gazes of strangers, the Maybach features rear high-grade fabric window curtains that can be operated from all four seats.

MULTIMEDIA

Maybach occupants enjoy the convenience of audio, video, phone and navigation systems as standard equipment. Installed in the front center console, the COMAND unit manages the functions of the radio, DVD, and front telephone, as well as the navigation system and other services. Rear passengers can control specific audio and video systems using a remote control. The driver can also control the communication systems by voice, keeping both hands on the steering wheel for safety.

BOSE® EVERYWHERE DOLBY SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM

Twenty-one speakers and a maximum output of 600 watts help create a unique surround-sound experience inside the Maybach. The DRO (dynamic range optimization) system uses a microphone inside the car to sense variations in the ambient sound level and corrects the audio output automatically.

ELECTROTRANSPARENT PANORAMIC GLASS ROOF

One of the most spectacular innovations is the panoramic glass roof for the Maybach 62. It consists of a glass surface which appears to be continuous when viewed from the exterior, extending from the windshield to the rear window. The front section of the roof is equipped with solar cells, while a second, electrotransparent panel is installed under the exterior glass roof above the rear-seat area. This panel, which admits an exceptionally high level of daylight to the interior, can be rendered opaque in an instant at the touch of a button. Transparency is restored in the same way. An electrically operated sliding roof liner situated between the inner and outer roof panels functions as a blind and becomes luminescent when an electrical current is applied to it. A dimming control in the rear center console allows the light intensity to be adjusted.

DISTRONIC

In the Maybach an electronic system helps you maintain the desired distance to the vehicle in front. DISTRONIC shows the driver just what that distance is on the display. If the gap narrows, the car is automatically braked; if the gap widens, the car accelerates up to the set speed. If harder braking is needed, a visual and acoustic warning prompts the driver to take action accordingly.

REAR REFRIGERATOR

Installed in the rear center console and equipped with its own compressor, the thermostatically controlled refrigerator - a no-cost option, allows passengers to enjoy chilled drinks or food.

Ford India all set to ramp up its Chennai unit

Ford India MD and president Michael Boneham told that the fully-owned subsidiary of the US auto major Ford Motors, Ford India Motors will be one of the major production hubs for the parent company’s operations in the Asia-African region.

Ford India is all set to invest $500 million to ramp up its Chennai plant’s production capacity to 2-lakh vehicles by 2010.

Ford Motor showcased its compact car, Ford Figo, in India on Wednesday. However, this small car will be launched in India by early 2010. The compact car, Ford Figo, will be available in petrol and diesel versions.

This four-door hatchback will be manufactured in Ford Chennai plant. Apart from this, the company reveled about its exteriors but specific details about engine capacity, price and other data is under cover. Ford Figo is believed to compete with the Hyundai i20 and the Maruti Swift. The recent global trend is to switch over to small cars that are fuel efficient but Ford India's products present here in mid-sized cars and SUV class. Ford showcases small cars this week

US company, Ford is now eying on India to offset tough business conditions in other global markets. The company that survived the downturn without a government help, Ford Motor is planning to integrate car designs globally and develop compact and mid-sized cars as part of a strategy to improve profitability and productivity.

Ford has focussed on economies of scale and implementing ‘One Ford’ strategy across markets. Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Ford Motor, is also making a lightning visit to India to showcase its small car in the middle of this week. He joined Ford in 2006 after divesting brands like Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin.This moment will be exciting and worth watching. Ford India has not had a new product launch, but continues to upgrade its existing product line since 2005.

Ford India will launch its small car, code named B517 in March 2010, which is expected to compete with the Hyundai i20 and the Maruti Swift, that were also showcased to its dealers in Chennai recently. The small car will be a four-door hatchback, powered by an indigenous diesel and petrol engine manufactured at its Chennai plant. Ford India has invested around $500 million (Rs 2,400 crore) to double the current capacity by one lakh cars and 2.5 lakh engines, company officials said.

Ford Motor has plans to make India its manufacturing hub for its small car Ford Figo. Ford Figo will be launched in the first quarter of 2010 and come in both petrol and diesel variants. No prices have been officially announced by Ford India but the car is expected to cost at Rs.4 lakh and upwards for the base variant and will compete against an array of cars like Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz, Fiat Grande Punto, Chevrolet U-VA and Hyundai i20 that are already present in the market.

After unveiling the Ford Figo in Delhi, Ford’s president and CEO, Alan Mulally said: “The global market is shifting towards smaller cars and India has a predominant advantage with a 70% market for compact cars." Ford to increase market share by new car launches

Michael Boneham, president and MD of Ford India here on Thursday indicated that the US car maker, Ford has decided to launch a new car every 12 to 18 months in India to enhance its market share. However, he did not indicate what sort of market share the company aims to achieven the long run. Talking to newsmen at the inauguration of Ford’s new dealership, Victoria Ford, Mr. Boneham said: "We now have a marketshare of nearly 2% and we want to grow it significantly in coming years. Launching of new cars from the Ford stable, will play a crucial role in growing our market share in India."

For 2009, Ford India aims to achieve sales of 30,000 cars compared to 29,000 cars sold in calendar 2008. "In September ‘09, we have been able to sell 3,500 cars which is a 50% increase year-on-year basis," said Nigel Wark, executive director (marketing, sales and services). By investing $500 million, company will expand production at its Chennai plant from 1 lakh to 2 lakh vehicles, apart from producing 2.5 lakh engines, both in petrol and diesel.

Ford to launch next version of Explorer SUV
