On Saturday 16 July 2011 South Africa witnessed the largest annual gathering of Ferraris when approximately 80 of the sleek sports cars screamed onto the Kyalami Race Track in Midrand.
The event was hosted by the Southern Equitorial Ferrari Automobili Club (SEFAC) which was created in 1967 with the blessing of Commendatore Enzo Ferrari, making it the oldest Ferrari owners’ club in the world.
Most of the Club’s 200-plus Gauteng members were present; not just to show their spectacular Maranello masterpieces, but to test their performance on our country’s most storied racetrack! Cars on track included the fire-breathing F40, the super-exclusive 458 Italia, F430 Scuderia 16M and the super California as well as classics such as Ferrari 308 , the 550 Barchetta, the 365GTB/4 Daytona.
Pirelli Tyre was present to showcase their Ultra High Performance, PZero product, which comes as original equipment on Ferraris. Pirelli has received accolades for changing the face of Formula One this year due tor the various PZero compounds introduced to make the sport more challenging by making tyre strategy the most important part of a race.
Pirelli offered guests a ride around the track in a classic Ferrari 308. The vehicle was made famous in the 1980’s by the American crime drama television series, Magnum, P.I. staring Tom Selleck as private investigator Thomas Magnum.
Pirelli is not only the official tyre supplier for the FIA Formula One Championship for a three-year period starting from 2011 to 2013) but is also currently exclusively supplies some of the most important World Championships for both cars and bikes, such as the GP3 series, the World Rally Championship, the Rolex Sports Car Series in North America, the World Superbike Championship, and the Motocross World Championship.
As this was a family event, PlayStation was stationed at the Pirelli pit to offer guests a simulated adrenaline experience through two of their latest racing games Gran Turismo 5 and SBK®2011.
In Gran Turismo 5, you can tackle the world’s most famous racetracks, rendered in high definition that is as vivid as the real thing, and get behind the wheels of some of the most legendary cars in motor racing from past to cutting-edge present.
