The 2013 Infiniti JX concept (as it is currently known) will debut this August at the Infiniti-sponsored Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Although the JX will share its basic platform with the Nissan Murano and thus likely use its 3.5-liter V6/CVT Powertrains, Infiniti has trademarked the JX20, JX25, JX25h and JX30 names, leading us to believe that smaller-displacement V6 engines and hybrid models will be offered.

Had enough of Infiniti’s recent barrage of cryptic teaser shots? You’re in luck, as the automaker unwrapped the new JX Concept — which previews a new crossover model — this evening in Pebble Beach, California.



Though Infiniti representatives dub this particular car a concept, we’re told it’s a fairly accurate preview of the forthcoming 2013 JX. Subsequently, Infiniti believes the JX — which is sized between the sporty FX crossover and the large QX56 sport-utility can succeed in today’s market.



The three-row luxury crossover segment provides a huge opportunity for Infiniti, Ben Poore, Infiniti Americas vice president, said in a prepared release. The JX’s long, muscular front clip and elongated headlamps recall that of the FX, while its tall roofline and bold grille echo the QX. The sole interior photo released shows a cabin that resembles the FX but adopts the QX’s wood accents, chrome trim and upscale door panel accents. Infiniti also says passengers can tilt and slide those seats forward for access to the third row, even if a child seat is still installed in a second-row seat.

The QX56 comes alive when the sun sets. With its brilliant directional headlights scanning the countryside, its 3/4 overhead navigation tableau reeling off street names as you pass them, and the dual movie screens of the optional ($2,450) rear “Theater Package” blasting pixels into the dark, this Infiniti is the wonder of the digital age. While it’s not much to look at from outside, this boxy, heavy SUV gains all its momentum inside, where a palatial interior cocoons up to 8 occupants with Air Force One attention to detail. The BarcaLounger-sized front seats allow you to survey a jungle-like swath of Mocha Burl trim covering the outer rim of the steering wheel, the center stack of the dash, and the front quarters of all 4 doors. The driver’s seat adjusts in 8 ways, the passenger’s in 6.

You’ll be well advised to use the running board when stepping into this lofty cabin, because the QX sits 9.2 inches tall on its optional, Deluxe Touring Package ($5,800), 22 inch tires. The extra loot for this pricey package not only brings you 9-spoke, forged alloy rims and Monster Truck sized (275/50R22) Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires, but also aniline leather heated front and rear seats, advanced climate control, easy-tilt and fold second row seats, and an hydraulic motion dampener to counteract ride pitchiness. The easy-tilt back seats are a notable blessing.
While you’re examining the option sheet, you might also want to select the $2,850 Technology Package. This grouping is useful if you lane wander on the freeway, or have trouble judging distance-to-crash when parking. The Techno Package offers Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention, Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent (read radar-based) Cruise Control, plus those wonderful headlights that change direction when you do. The Techno Package performs unobtrusively. Congratulations to Infiniti for providing valuable safety assists without intruding unduly on your driving experience. Best of all, you can disable some of these features at will, and re-enable them when needed. Tall glass windows make for excellent vision, so you won’t need LDW in normal driving. But when towing a trailer (the QX can pull a whopping 8,500 pounds), you’ll want to enable LDW as a helpful preventative measure.

Due to its 5,590 pound weight, this behemoth needs lots of horsepower and torque. The 5.6 liter V8 fills that bill with 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Though it lacks steering wheel paddles, the 7-speed automatic gearbox offers manual override for up and downshifts, plus rev-matching for downshifts, via a console-mounted stickshift with manual gate. Around town and when towing, the QX struggles to achieve 14 MPG, but cruises comfortably at 20 MPG on the open road. And long distance cruising is definitely the métier of this big Infiniti. Pile the kids in back, let them have at the twin DVD players, and they’ll be anesthetized for hours. Meanwhile the adults up front can luxuriate in comfort while benefiting from all the stress reduction provided by that automatic watchdog, the Technology Package. For such a transcendental driving experience, $72,475 seems a reasonable price to pay.

2011 Infiniti M37 Review

2011 Infiniti M37.The first-generation M-series was a mildly dressed up Japanese domestic market Nissan. The second generation brought the car up to contemporary expectations in terms of exterior styling, but fell a little short on the inside.

That outgoing model was an excellent car in virtually all respects, but facing competition from established benchmarks such as the Mercedes-Benz E Class and BMW 5 Series meant that Infiniti needed to make improvements.

Power and control
This engine also scores 18 mpg on the EPA's city driving cycle and 26 mpg on the highway. In mixed suburban driving, our test car returned 19 mpg.

The M37's transmission works well in full automatic mode, or the driver can opt to shift gears manually for more complete control during hard driving.

The only exception to this commendable unobtrusiveness occurs if the driver makes the mistake of selecting Eco mode on the center console-mounted Infiniti Drive control knob. Under most driving conditions, they are normally innocuous. No marginal improvement in fuel economy could be worth enduring Eco mode for long. Conversely, its engine is a good match for the BMW's and easily tops the Mercedes-Benz V6.

BMW's 535i is pricier, at $52,775 base, though the company has introduced an entry-level 528i with a smaller engine that starts at just $45,425, if customers can live with 90 hp less than the Infiniti. One outstanding interior feature is a high-definition widescreen display that makes other companies' efforts look like Atari video games.

The Jaguar XF is a striking contender, probably closest to the Infiniti in ambience and design philosophy. The difficulty in winning fans means that Infiniti could have a hard time convincing shoppers that the $50,465 bottom line (including $865 destination) on the tested M37 (with the Premium Package) represents good value.

The Sport package (not available with all-wheel drive) adds 20-inch wheels, summer tires, sport-tuned suspension and brakes, four-wheel active steering, sport seats and steering wheel, and unique exterior styling elements. The Sport Touring package adds the surround-sound stereo, air purifier and power sunshade to the Sport package. The Technology package includes adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning and prevention system, blind-spot warning system, forward collision warning system, adaptive headlights and the "eco pedal" that provides feedback to the driver to encourage fuel-efficient driving.

Rear-wheel drive is standard, but the M37x features all-wheel drive. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway with rear-wheel drive and 17/24 with all-wheel drive.

Over its three generations, Infiniti’s M car has gone from a staid, upright, obsolete-when-it-debuted sedan with a big engine to a curve-heavy technology-packed luxury car with a big engine. The first generation of the M was basically a left hand drive, Infiniti-badged version of the JDM Nissan Gloria. The second-generation M stepped up the technology game over the original car, adding features like four wheel steering, all wheel drive, blind spot warning system, a sophisticated multimedia entertainment system, and a standard V6 engine. The M’s cabin is a stylish, well-appointed place to spend time. It requires diligence to actually find cheap-feeling, hard plastics – all of the car’s touch points are either French stitched pleather, real metal, real wood veneer, or soft-touch plastic. For a car up one price class (and a half-size larger) from Infiniti’s G37 sedan, this is all par for the course. For 2011, the Infiniti M37 has Infiniti’s newest VQ-series V6, this one displacing 3.7 liters, and it pulls strongly at nearly every engine speed. Manual gear changes are possible with a separate shift gate on the console-mounted lever, but they’re frustratingly inconsistent in their speed of execution.

The suspension in this non-Sport Package-equipped tester was a bit too soft for my taste, but I’ll give Infiniti credit for continuing to offer that as a choice to those who want larger wheels (the Sport Package comes with 20 inch wheels versus this car’s 18s) and a firmer, more controlled ride.

The 2011 Infiniti M56 is a big car, but it drives smaller than you might think.
Compared to long-standing luxury leaders such as Audi and Jaguar, the Infiniti lacks snob status. Expert drivers have achieved nearly 30 mpg/highway using Eco mode; the “Eco pedal” applies resistance to the accelerator pedal so that drivers cannot unceremoniously floor the pedal, thus wasting fuel.

In automobile parlance, the Infiniti M56 has “organic” styling, with voluptuous curves and flowing lines. Functional elements – door handles, dashboard controls, etc. – are beautifully stylized but retain their sensibility; ergonomics is considered one of the Infiniti’s highlights.

2011 Infiniti EX35 Review

The 2011 Infiniti EX35 gets a new transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Standard on the Journey are a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, heated front seats, sunroof, wireless cell-phone link, and hard drive for storing digital-music files. Lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, power-folding rear seat backs, and a navigation system are among the options offered on the Journey.

Premium-Compact SUVs are luxury SUVs that are compact in size.
With rear-wheel-drive and a more wagon-like profile, the EX35 isn’t your average people and cargo hauler. if Goldilocks drove, she might consider it just right. North America sees the EX in 3.5-liter trim (hence EX35), but Europe and Japan get a zippier EX37 with Infiniti’s larger V6, while China gets an EX25 with Infinit’s smaller V6.
For the 2011 model year, the Infiniti EX35 finds itself grille to grille with some of the brightest in the business.

Any breakthroughs?
Then there are the other techno-fab pieces like the Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Departure Prevention systems, Full-speed Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist, and finally the Blind Spot Warning system.

When you compare the EX with big brother FX, you get the impression that the EX came out on top when the genetics were being sorted out. With our Infiniti and its rear-wheel-drive setup (all-wheel-drive is optional), we didn’t even make an attempt at some of the rough terrain that is South Florida.

Chrome trim strips frame the greenhouse, and blacked out B, C and D-pillars help to minimize the size that comes with adding various safety items like air curtains and seat side-curtain airbags. The overall look is finished off nicely with 19-inch split-spoke wheels mounted with Bridgestone Potenza sport tires. The liftgate is equipped with a curved expanse of glass covered by a rear window shade. Once again, Infiniti shows that it is at the top of its game as far as interior design is concerned. Infiniti has managed to avoid going to the spinning control dial as seen in Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW and, yes, Hyundai vehicles. Large, living room chair-style front seats kept us firmly tucked in during our tracking through twisties. Cargo space in the “way back” was accommodating for 18.6 cubic feet with the 60-40 split seats in the upright and locked position. Following Infiniti’s (and Nissan’s) economy of scale, the EX shares underpinnings with its sistership, the G sedan. But with the EX 5.6 inches shorter in overall length at 182.3, than the G’s 187.9-inches, it is able to bring forth a sporty car feel that actually makes it a fun driver.

Our EX RWD weighed in at 3,795 lbs., and according to the EPA, managed to tick off 17 city and 24 highway miles per gallon during government testing. From a handling standpoint, the EX is equipped with a subframe mounted double-wishbone setup that has high-performance dual-pass shock absorbers with a 26mm stabilizer bar in front. A speed-determined variable-power assist handles steering.

The EX was quite the performer throughout our week of constant cruising. Once again, the thought “Infiniti G wagon” came to mind.
Infiniti’s 2011 EX35 captures the spritely feeling of a small car with the luxury and technology of a land yacht.

Lumping the Infiniti EX35 in with other “small cars” is a bit of a stretch. The Infiniti EX35 is not exactly small, since it measures about 15 feet long and weighs 3,764 pounds. Like the Infiniti M37x, the EX35 has that cocooning cockpit feel. You slip in and the car just feels right. The lighting inside, especially the “electroluminescent” gauges, have that extra luxury look that makes the car worth the higher price tag (our test car is priced at $46,605 but the base price is $35,150 – or much closer to the X3.)

The exterior styling is not as pronounced as the M37x we tested.
Pick a speed, any speed
We’re jumping right to the driving experience here, because that is the real draw with this sporty hatchback. It now has a 7-speed transmission. Truth be told, switching from a 5-speed to a 7-speed might be a technical improvement. The real reason the Infiniti EX35 begs you to drive fast is due to the cockpit feel.

All-wheel-drive versions of The 2011 Infiniti Fx35 feature a snow mode for smoother takeoffs on slippery roads.

Sporty luxury crossover SUVs like the 2011 Infiniti FX37 and FX50 seem to be gaining in popularity. And with the FX, Infiniti emphasizes "sport" over utility. The FX50's Deluxe Touring is similar but adds 21-inch wheels. The Technology package (which requires the Deluxe Touring package) adds automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlamps, intelligent brake assist and a lane-departure warning and prevention system.
A Sport package is available for the FX50 only, and adds dark-tinted exterior trim, active rear steering, adaptive two-mode suspension dampers, paddle shifters and sport front seats.
The 2011 Infiniti FX35 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 303 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard for the FX35; an all-wheel-drive system with a rear bias to preserve the vehicle's sporty handling capabilities is optional. The FX50 is only offered with AWD.
The EPA estimates fuel consumption for the AWD FX35 at 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined, while rear-drive models are rated at 16/23/19 mpg. The FX50 is estimated at 14/20/16 mpg.
Safety
Standard safety features for the 2011 Infiniti FX35 and FX50 include antilock disc brakes with brake assist, front-seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, traction control and stability control. Recent Edmunds brake testing yielded very favorable results for both FX versions. Stopping from 60 mph required only 114 feet for the FX35 and 117 feet for the FX50.
In terms of handling and ride quality, both the 2011 Infiniti FX35 and FX50 deliver similar experiences.

The 2011 Infiniti FX is a great choice is you want a sporty, stylish and high-tech crossover SUV. But, if you’re looking for family-SUV practicality, look elsewhere.
Three things set the 2011 Infiniti FX apart from the luxury midsize SUV pack: its high-tech safety features, sporty performance and fashion-forward styling. The FX has coupe-like styling. It looks great but cuts into passenger and cargo space.

As luxury crossovers go, the 2011 Infiniti EX (formerly the EX35) inhabits a small niche. The EX's wheelbase is just 2 inches longer and its ride height 1 inch taller than the Infiniti G37 sedan that underpins it. For 2011 the EX also gets a new exterior look, with 18-inch wheels standard on both trim levels. For 2011, the EX also features a blind-spot warning system.

The 2011 Infiniti EX is a five-passenger crossover luxury wagon available in base and Journey trim levels. If you’re a driving enthusiast who needs more cargo space than Infiniti’s G sedan provides, reviewers say the EX is a great choice.
